The Southern Sudan Program is also called the Sudan Health Transformation Project (SHTP). It was conceived and designed as a broad program under which the USAID / Sudan Field Office and partnering organizations would improve the health conditions for the people of Southern Sudan.
Southern Sudan became a member of the AFENET Network in October 2007; however, the Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP) was already operational with affiliations to the Technology Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. The Southern Sudan program is also affiliated with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Nairobi.
AFENET operates within the confines of the National Health Policy of the Government of Southern Sudan towards the following objectives:
- To strengthen applied field epidemiology and laboratory management
- To strengthen communicable disease surveillance systems
- To improve the disease outbreak investigation and response
