Ghana FETP holds first workshop for Cohort X Frontline trainees

The Ghana Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (GFELTP) with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) have organized workshops for the frontline trainees.

Cohort X frontline trainees undertook workshop one from 5 – 9 March 2018 at the Grand Favor Hotel, Takoradi in the Western Region. Cohort X trainees comprised of 30 trainees made of 7 Disease Control Officers, 4 Health Information Officers, 2 Public Health Nurses, 2 Public Health Officers, 6 Laboratory Scientists, 5 Veterinary Technical Officers, 2 Nutrition Officers and 2 officials from the Food and Drugs Authority. Trainees were selected with priority given to health personnel working in districts that shared borders with neighboring countries. Trainees were selected from five districts, namely; Prestea Huni Valley, Aowin, Suaman, Bia West and Juaboso in the Western Region.

The training covered topics such as; Introduction to public health surveillance, Surveillance cycle, Data collection, Case definitions, Line list, Data quality, Summarizing qualitative and quantitative data, Interpreting surveillance data and Monitoring and evaluation (M&E). Trainees had hands-on sessions on how to summarize and display surveillance data using Microsoft Excel.

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Donne Kofi Ameme – Resident Advisor, GFELTP, Mr. Ebenezer Kofi Mensah and Mr. Charles Lwanga Noora – both alumni of the GFELTP. The workshop was also attended by Dr. Samuel Sackey - Field Coordinator, GFELTP, Mr. Abu Sumaila, Head - FDA, Western Region and Dr. Augustus Ayitey who represented the Head of VSD, Western Region.

Cohort X trainees will undertake their first field assignment, from March 12 to April 6, 2018. The second didactic workshop is slated for April 9 - 13, 2018.
