2nd Annual Ethiopian FELTP Scientific Conference, Addis Ababa

The Ethiopia Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program has held its scientific conference since 2017. This year’s conference was held from 26th to 28th June, 2018 at the Public Health Training Center, at the Ethiopia Public Health Institute (EPHI), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The second Annual Conference was themed: Addressing Global Health Security through the Field Epidemiology Training in Ethiopia.

The conference began with workshops on 25 June 2018 for residents and academic mentors. The workshops were on the topics: Scientific Writing and Publication by Dr. Julie Haris, Immunization in Ethiopia by Dr. Ciara Sugerman, Malaria Interventions by Dr Mathew Murphy and Mentorship Training for Instructors by Dr. David Sugerman.

Residents, graduates and faculty of the Ethiopia Program presented abstracts based on field research and outbreak responses. The Ethiopia FELTP Scientific Conference is one among five other FELTP conferences held so far in DRC, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal. Based on AFENET’s fifth strategic priority which promotes documentation and dissemination of experiences in public health, these conferences provide a platform for residents to share experiences as well as build capacity through the trainings and workshops.

The conference was opened 26 June 2018 by key public health dignitaries from the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Ministry of Health Dr Getachew Tollera, Director Human Resource Ministry of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); Dr Sylvia Murphy, Dr .Kathleen Gallagher, Dr. David Sugerman and Dr. Julie Haris, and Dr. Ciara Sugerman among others. The African Centers for Disease Control (AFCDC) Director, Dr. John Nkengasong made opening remarks as well as and the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) Director, Dr Chima Ohuabunwo.
