AFENET made courtesy call to the Uganda National Health Laboratory Services (UNHLS) / Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL), meeting the Executive Director, Dr. Susan Ndidde Nabadda and team on 25 July 2018 at the UNHLS office in Butabika, Kampala, Uganda.
AFENET Executive Director led a team from AFENET which comprised Dr Olivia Namusisi – Technical Advisor, Dr Issa Makumbi – Manager of the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (PHEOC), Dr Godfrey Kayita - Senior Epidemiologist and Senior Project Coordinator and Mr Davis Ashaba - Laboratory Scientist.
Some of the key CPHL staff present at the meeting included: Guma Gaspard – Technical Advisor, Ms Christine Namulidwa –Laboratory Manager and Patrick Ogwok-Agwa - National Laboratory Quality Assurance Coordinator
Dr Nabadda mentioned that CPHL is mandated to providing stewardship for the National Health Laboratory network and contributing to the prevention and control of diseases through early detection of the disease burden. CPHL also plays a key role in developing laboratory policy, guidelines and standards, monitor and evaluate National Health Laboratory Services, supervise National Laboratory Quality Assurance and Control. The Central lab also participates in operational research, and provide reference and specialized testing services such as Sickle cell screening for new borns, and Hepatitis B viral load testing.
Dr Chima gave a brief introduction about AFENET (Mission, Goal) and highlighted the need for more collaborations between the two institutions.
