Dr. Vida Mmbaga is a Tanzanian public health specialist and epidemiologist, currently serving as the Program Director of the Tanzania Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (TFELTP). She works within the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, where she contributes to strengthening national capacity for disease surveillance, outbreak detection, and emergency response.
Dr. Mmbaga holds qualifications in medicine and public health, including advanced training in epidemiology (MD, MPH, MSc Epi). Her expertise spans field epidemiology, infectious disease control, surveillance systems, and emerging health threats.
With over two decades of experience in public health practice and research, she has played a key role in outbreak investigations and national health security initiatives, including responses to diseases such as Marburg virus and respiratory infections in Tanzania. She has also contributed to the development of national strategies like the National Action Plan for Health Security, working closely with government and global partners such as WHO.
As Program Director of TFELTP, Dr. Mmbaga leads efforts to train frontline and advanced-level field epidemiologists, strengthening Tanzania’s workforce to prevent, detect, and respond to public health emergencies. Her work continues to support evidence-based decision-making and resilient health systems across the country.
