ZimFETP workshop on systems mapping and modelling for disease surveillance evaluation

The Zimbabwe Field Epidemiology Training Program (ZimFETP) successfully concluded a workshop on Systems Mapping and Modelling for Disease Surveillance Evaluation, bringing together key partners and experts to strengthen Zimbabwe’s disease surveillance and outbreak response capacity. Participants included ZimFETP field supervisors from various sites and program levels, as well as residents currently in training.
Supported by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), represented by Jayson Basera and Alice Wynne, the workshop also brought together partners from AFENET (Dr. Ben Masiira), the World Health Organization (WHO) — including Dr. Lincolin Charimari (Country Office) and Dr. Ishata Conteh (Regional Office) — the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC), represented by Mr. Danda from the Epidemiology and Disease Control Unit, and the University of Zimbabwe.
The workshop focused on applying systems thinking and simulation modelling to enhance the efficiency, coordination, and responsiveness of national disease surveillance systems. Participants engaged in hands-on sessions on systems mapping, R-based digital event simulation, and the evaluation of emergency preparedness frameworks.
A key outcome of the workshop was the initiation of a co-development process for a deployment framework for ZimFETP trainees and graduates — strengthening their role in emergency preparedness, response, and routine public health functions.
The MoHCC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting collaborative efforts that build a resilient, data-driven, and well-coordinated public health system in Zimbabwe.
Congratulations to all participants and partners for contributing to a workshop that advances epidemiologic practice and health security innovation.
