The Minister of Health and Social Services of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Ali Haji Adam, today officially launched the Pandemic Fund Project, an important initiative aimed at strengthening Somalia’s capacity to prevent, prepare for, detect, and respond to infectious diseases and public health emergencies.

The launch ceremony was attended by the State Minister of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, H.E Dr. Maryan Mohamed Hussein; the Executive Director of the National Institute of Health, Dr. Hussein Mohiadin; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Hamse Hadow; the Director General of the Ministry of Livestock, Forestry and Range, Dr. Guled Abdi Jalil; departmental directors; representatives from the Federal Member States; the World Bank; FAO, UNICEF, Africa CDC; IGAD, AFENET, civil society organizations; and other key institutions involved in implementing the project.

During the launch ceremony, which was held in Mogadishu, the Minister stated that the project is the result of continuous planning, consultation, and collaboration between the Federal Government of Somalia, international institutions, and health partners, with the aim of building a health system capable of responding effectively to health threats facing the country.

The Minister emphasized that Somalia is placing particular importance on prevention and preparedness for health threats, rather than waiting until an outbreak or pandemic occurs before taking action. He noted that investing in and strengthening national preparedness capacities is essential for protecting public health and strengthening the country’s health system.

The Pandemic Fund Project will focus on strengthening the country’s capacities in disease surveillance and detection, laboratories, early warning systems, health information sharing, institutional coordination, and emergency response. The project will also contribute to strengthening cooperation among different levels of government and health partners.

The launch of this project marks an important step forward for Somalia in strengthening national health security and building a resilient health system capable of responding rapidly, in a coordinated and effective manner, to infectious diseases, pandemics, and other public health emergencies.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services will continue its efforts to strengthen health preparedness while enhancing cooperation among the government, international organizations, and all health partners, with the goal of ensuring sustainable health and safety for the Somali population.
