AFENET’s Impact on Strengthening Routine Immunization Data in Nigeria

AFENET Nigeria revolutionized the country’s immunization data system by introducing and scaling the DHIS2 Routine Immunization (RI) Module nationwide. Previously, data was limited to counts of vaccinated children, with no visibility into vaccine logistics, resulting in significant data gaps, limited access, and accountability challenges. With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the US CDC, AFENET piloted the module in Kano and successfully expanded it to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Today, Nigeria reports all routine immunization data through this centralized platform, achieving over 80% completeness in reporting. The module has fostered strong government ownership, improved transparency, and enabled real-time, evidence-based decision-making across all levels. This intervention stands as a landmark in digital health innovation and sustainable health system strengthening in Nigeria.
