Acting Deputy chief of mission, David Ballard

The Botswana Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) held an inspiring and impactful symposium from August 11–15, bringing together field epidemiologists, public health professionals and key stakeholders from across the country. It served as a powerful platform for FETP graduates and trainees to present their contributions to strengthening disease surveillance, outbreak response, and health research in Botswana.

Guided by the theme “Harnessing Field Epidemiology Capacities in Botswana for National Health Security and Strong Health Systems”, the symposium highlighted the critical role that field epidemiology plays in advancing both national and global health priorities.

One of the most significant moments of the event was the presentation of outbreak investigations, surveillance evaluations, and the group projects conducted by FETP trainees and alumni. These showcased real-life examples of how field epidemiology capacity leads to quicker responses, sharper decision-making, and stronger health security across the country. The symposium not only celebrated achievements but also reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to building resilient health systems through field epidemiology.
