From 12th to 16th May 2025, the Ministry of Health’s Department of Integrated Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Public Health Emergencies, in collaboration with key development partners, hosted a five-day workshop to finalize Uganda’s National Mortality Surveillance Guidelines.
The workshop marked a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen the collection, collation, analysis, dissemination, and use of mortality data for public health surveillance, strategic planning, policy formulation, and priority health interventions.
Building on the initial draft developed in September 2024, and aligned with the 2024 Mortality Surveillance Roadmap, the workshop successfully:
- Finalized the National Mortality Surveillance Guidelines
- Initiated the development of harmonized data-collection tools and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Strengthened collaboration with the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) to improve death notification and civil registration processes
The event was co-funded by the CDC Foundation’s Data for Health Initiative, the Ministry of Health, and other contributing partners.
