In August, the Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP-Mozambique) marked a major milestone 15 years of strengthening the country’s epidemiological workforce and supporting Mozambique’s public health system.

A key highlight of this anniversary year was the graduation ceremony for cohorts 9 (BED Plus) and 10 (District Surveillance Technicians) of the FETP Frontline Programme. The event, held on 31 October 2025 at the Zambézia Provincial Health Directorate in Quelimane, celebrated the training of 42 new frontline surveillance professionals, who will now join the national public health surveillance network.

The ceremony brought together representatives from the National Institute of Health (INS), the Surveillance Department of the National Directorate of Public Health (DNSP), the Provincial Delegation of the INS in Zambézia, the Provincial Health Directorate, the Provincial Services of Zambézia, and the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries a strong demonstration of the intersectoral collaboration needed for an effective public health response.

During the event, graduates presented findings from field studies conducted in their districts. Their work addressed a range of priority health issues, including notifiable diseases such as neonatal tetanus and measles, as well as non-communicable conditions such as suspected cervical cancer and road traffic injuries. One of the standout presentations was the “Description of leprosy cases in Namarroi District from January to July 2024 and 2025,” which highlighted a concerning rise in case numbers, despite Mozambique having achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem in 2008.

With the graduation of these two cohorts, FETP Frontline has now trained 151 surveillance technicians across Mozambique, significantly strengthening district-level epidemiological surveillance and improving the country’s capacity to detect, investigate, and respond to public health threats early.

As it celebrates 15 years of impact, FETP-Mozambique reaffirms its commitment to developing skilled public health professionals who can transform data into action, advancing integrated, efficient, and resilient surveillance systems that safeguard the health of communities across the country.
