The Somalia National Institute of Health (NIH), in collaboration with the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), successfully conducted a supplementary training focused on Routine Immunization and Vaccine-Preventable Disease Surveillance (VPDS) in Mogadishu, Somalia.
This training brought together 50 frontline healthcare workers, graduates from the first four cohorts of Somalia’s Frontline Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP), who work across health authorities and health Facilities. The aim was to enhance their capacity to improve data quality for routine immunization, facilitate early detection, and effectively respond to vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks, particularly for underserved children.
The Training concluded with an official closing ceremony on 17th April 2025, where Dr. Husien Abukar, Executive Director of Somalia NIH, and Dr. Tatek Bogale-Horn, AFENET’s Africa Coordinator, awarded certificates of completion to the participants
This initiative marks another important step toward building a stronger and more responsive public health system in Somalia.
