Preparations for the 7th AFENET Scientific Conference, Maputo Mozambique

The African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) will as part of its networking and collaboration function, hold an annual Scientific Conference in Maputo, Mozambique.  The conference which will be held in November 2018 In Maputo will be the 7th of conference held rotationally amongst African Countries.  The biennial regional conferences which provide platform for:


·       Field Epidemiology and other public health trainees from within and beyond Africa to share their work with the public health community.  

·       Field Epidemiology (and Laboratory) Training Programs (FE (L) TPs) in Africa to showcase their contribution to public Health.

·       The dissemination of cutting edge science emerging out of Africa to the rest of the world.

·       The international community to meet with African players in the health sector and hold dialogue on a common development agenda and initiate joint programs.

Participants of the conference include trainees & graduates of FELTPs, faculty, partners and stakeholders.

An advance team from four departments at the AFENET secretariat: Administration, Finance, Communication and IT went to Mozambique to initiate preparations for the 7th AFENET Scientific Conference to be held in November 2018.

The team was led by the Executive Director who spearheaded discussions with the Director General – INS, Director Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and USAID. Some of the partners met include: Director General INS - Dr Ilesh VJani, MD, PHD, Country Director CDC - Dr Alfredo. E. Vergara, PhD, USAID Director for Health Services and Program Director – Dr Cynthia Cema.

Through discussions partners and stakeholders, it emerged the country and Mozambique FELTP are ready to host the conference. Over 1000 delegates are anticipated to participate in the coming conference.


To enhance partner engagement, AFENET Board of Directors will meet the conference steering committee on 2 October 2017 in Maputo. This meeting is intended to boost preparation and draft clear plans and roles for partners in the preparations.
