Uganda’s Moroto and Sembabule districts battle Measles outbreak: Investigation and response ongoing

Uganda is experiencing a surge in measles cases across several districts, posing a significant threat to public health. Over 1000 cases have been reported across 20 districts since January 2024. The districts affected include Obongi, Koboko, Yumbe, Arua City, Kassanda, Hoima, Maracha, Kasese, Kyenjojo, Amuru, Mbale, Manafwa, Kamwenge, Nebbi, Kakumiro, Kikuube, Ntoroko, Kiboga, Moroto, and Sembabule, have confirmed measles outbreaks.

Despite implementing control measures, new cases continue to emerge, highlighting the need for further investigation and response. The African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) is collaborating with the Ministry of Health, Uganda, has deployed some ACCoD teams to manage this public health crisis.

In addition to other control measures, vaccination campaigns targeting children aged 6 months to 59 months have been conducted. The team is also determining the extent of the outbreak, unveiling factors contributing to the spread, and assisting the district’s health teams in implementing effective control measures to contain the outbreak.

The team is conducting daily coordination meetings with the district rapid response team (DRRT) and partners to ensure the effective implementation of action plans, review health records, conduct active case finding, enhance community awareness, and implement outbreak control measures. The team is working tirelessly to contain the current outbreak and enhance the overall preparedness and response capacity of Uganda in tackling future measles outbreaks.
