AFENET Hosts UNCST for Inspection and Supervision Visit

On 7 August 2024, the AFENET Secretariat had the honor of hosting a team from the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) for an important inspection and supervision visit. The UNCST, a key institution responsible for coordinating and guiding national research and development (R&D) efforts in Uganda, conducted this visit to ensure that ongoing research projects meet the highest standards of accountability, transparency, and ethical implementation.

During the visit, the UNCST team engaged in fruitful discussions with AFENET representatives, focusing on strategies to enhance the effectiveness and integrity of research studies. These conversations are crucial for maintaining the high standards that AFENET is committed to, ensuring that any potential issues are addressed proactively, and research outcomes are both credible and impactful.

One of the projects reviewed during the visit was the “Understanding School Health Service Provision in Uganda” initiative, which falls under the broader Life Course Vaccination Project. This project aims to assess and improve the delivery of health services within schools across Uganda, a vital component of the nation’s public health strategy.

The inspection visit was attended by a distinguished group of professionals, including:

  • Dr. Nicholas Ayebazibwe (AFENET)
  • Dr. John Kamulegeya (AFENET)
  • Samuel Barasa (UNCST)
  • Eve Namitala (UNCST)
  • Richard Odoch (UNCST)
  • Dr. Immaculate Ampeire (UNEPI)
  • Dr. Irene Mwenyango (Ministry of Health)
  • Dr. Yvette Wibabara (CDC)
  • Joseph Magoola (AFENET)

The Life course project is implemented in a combined effort to strengthen the provision of health services in educational settings, the Uganda Ministry of Health in collaboration with the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET). The collaboration aims to conduct a thorough evaluation of the country’s education sector’s readiness to deliver school health services.
