The African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) has taken a major step forward in advancing digital public health through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into disease surveillance, data analysis, and health systems strengthening initiatives.
Harnessing AI for Faster, Smarter Health Response
AI is enhancing AFENET’s ability to collect, process, and interpret public health data in real time. By applying predictive analytics, data mining, and machine learning, AFENET can now detect disease patterns earlier, issue faster alerts, and support countries to respond more effectively to outbreaks. Intelligent dashboards and automated reporting systems are also helping streamline surveillance operations and improve decision-making at regional and national levels.
Building Capacity in AI for Public Health
To ensure staff across the network can leverage these technologies, AFENET recently conducted an AI Training Program on Data Analysis, Report Writing, and Proposal Development
The training equipped technical, communication, M&E, and operations teams with hands-on skills to apply AI in everyday work — from automated data visualization and report generation to research design and budget preparation.
This initiative demonstrates AFENET’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration, ensuring staff can use AI to deliver better programmatic and research outcomes.
