AFENET’s Impact in Yobe State: Advancing Immunization and PHC Systems

AFENET began supporting Yobe State through the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP), following the establishment of NSTOP in 2012, AFENET included Yobe state as one of the intervention states due to it role in polio epidemiology in Nigeria. This singular action played a pivotal role in interrupting Wild Poliovirus transmission and the continued fight against cVPV2 and cVPV3. By deploying trained Senior Supervisors and Management Support Teams (MSTs), AFENET ensured high-quality immunization campaigns in underserved and hard-to-reach areas, including nomadic and border communities.

AFENET also strengthened PHC data systems by establishing the State Data Control Room, enhancing Local Government Area data structures, and introducing the Ward Data Ambassadors model, now adopted statewide. The organization has trained over 7,000 health workers and led coordination efforts through roles in the State Emergency Routine Immunisation Coordination Centre (SERICC) and the State Emergency Operations Center. During COVID-19, AFENET helped boost vaccination coverage from 8% to 98% in eight months. Its innovative strategies and consistent support contributed to Yobe’s recognition as the most improved state in RI in the Northeast and a 2024 PHC Leadership Challenge winner.
