AFENET’s Impact on Measles and Rubella Control in Nigeria
One of AFENET’s most notable achievements in Nigeria’s fight against measles and rubella was its instrumental role in the successful rollout of the Measles Outbreak Response (MOBR) capacity-building initiative in 2023. In collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other partners, AFENET supported the development and implementation of a comprehensive training package that empowered the national, state, and local health teams with the skills to not only detect and respond to measles outbreaks but also uncover the underlying causes driving recurrent outbreaks. This approach marked a milestone in shifting from reactive responses to a more strategic, prevention-focused model for Measles prevention in Nigeria and will form the foundation for the introduction of Measles -Rubella vaccine in 2025.
