Prof. Col. Edwin Andrew Afari (rtd.)
Prof. Col. (Rtd.) Edwin Andrews Afari is an Epidemiologist and Specialist in Public Health. He is the Coordinator for the MPhil in Applied Epidemiology and Disease Control/GFELTP at the School of Public Health, University of Ghana. He has over 30 years’ experience in public health practice and teaching. He was a Commanding Officer at the 37 Military Hospital and a Scientist at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Legon. In that capacity, he facilitated the creation of two field sites for outreach services and applied research, and initiated malaria research program with emphasis on malaria parasites sensitivity (in vivo and in vitro) to antimalarial drugs with support from WHO TDR. He was a WHO, Africa Regional Office Consultant for the revision of the Applied Epidemiology Course modules in English; and short-term consultant facilitator for 6 years for the revision and teaching of the WHO regional course on Applied Epidemiology for Senior Health Personnel from English Speaking Countries in Africa.
He was a Medical Officer at WHO Africa Regional Office Malaria Unit in-charge of planning, monitoring and evaluation and a member of the Regional team that initiated the Accelerated Malaria Control Program through African Malaria Initiative to Roll Back Malaria.
Prof. Afari was a Roll Back (RBM) Partnership Focal Person for Africa, and a Consultant to the Malaria Control Program in the implementation of antimalarial drug policy change in Ghana. He is the Current Chairperson of the National Malaria Control Programme Surveillance, Monitoring and Evaluation Working Group, and the president of the Ghana Public Health Association.
